Adding Outdoor Quality to Our Lives

There certainly is great pleasure in beholding a well-planned & carefully maintained garden. There is also something to be said for the process. Some people meditate, read, cook or knit cat sweaters.
We all create in different ways, but getting outside and into the dirt is some of the best physical and emotional therapy there is.

According to the American Horticultural Therapy Association (www.ahta.org)
A therapeutic garden is a plant-dominated environment purposefully designed to facilitate interaction with the healing elements of nature. Interactions can be passive or active depending on the garden design and users’ needs. There are many sub-types of therapeutic gardens including healing gardens, enabling gardens, rehabilitation gardens, and restorative gardens.”

Interacting with nature in this way can also be so educational. With all our combined years of experience at Green View, you’d think we’d have seen it all. Not so. There is always something new and interesting to learn. It’s a wonderful way to engage children as well. Check out the interesting “Endeavour” program Kew Gardens has developed to function with UK classrooms.

There are several recent studies about how time amongst the plants can improve our lives. Here are a couple articles I really enjoyed - let me know what you think!

How Much Mulch Does it Take?

Folks often find it rather confusing to determine how much mulch or soil they will require to finish out a bed. It's worth getting a rough estimate on square footage and depth.

Once you have this information, it's a pretty simple equation to figure out cubic yardage. Divide that total by 0.75 and you have the number of Green View scoops your project will require.

Most pickup trucks accommodate 2 scoops (be advised that the soil can weigh quite a bit, especially when it gets a bit of rain).

Call us or if you would like to do the math yourself, here is our guide:

Coverage per ¾ yard scoop / bale
Mulches: 8’ x 8’, 3” deep
Soils, Screenings & Sand: 7’ x 7’, 3” deep
Pine Needles: 30 square feet – per bale

Measurements & Math
Step 1: sq. ft. x Depth = cubic feet
Step 2: cubic feet / 27 (1 cu. yd. / 27 cu. ft.) = cubic yard
Step 3: cubic yard / .75 (cu. yd.) = # of scoops

Depth Chart

1” = .08     7” = .58
2” = .17     8” = .67
3” = .25     9” = .75
4” = .33    10” = .83
5” = .42    11” = .92
6” = .5      12” = 1.0

Example
150 sq. ft. x .25(3”) = 37.5 cubic feet
37.5 / 27 = 1.39 cubic yard
1.39 / .75 = 1.85 # of scoops*
*round up to the nearest whole scoop

Turf Mix
½ scoop McGill's "Soil Builder" compost + ½ scoop plain topsoil

Garden Mix
½  scoop McGill's "Soil Builder" compost + ½ scoop conditioned topsoil

Landscape Bed Mix
½ scoop McGill's "Soil Builder" compost + ½ scoop plain topsoil + 1 scoop conditioned topsoil

(It takes 1 ½ scoops of soil mix to fill a 4’ x 8’, 12” deep raised bed)

Year Round Installation and Construction

Your Investment
Watching your project take the first steps beyond design discussions can be an exciting time. It becomes real and the time you spent going over small details starts to all make sense. This is going to be a very beautiful and permanent change to your space! It is worth considering that you are also giving appeal to a potential future property buyer.
Just ask any realtor and they will tell you all about “curb appeal” for adding resale value. However, also do consider the “joy” factor. According to a recent report from the National Association of Realtors, both of these factors come to the surface & show landscape as an investment worth making.

Attention To Detail
You are trusting us to create something special. We put forth 100% with each project, utilizing years of education and experience. At the end, we don’t want to leave thinking that it is anything less than our very best.

Clear Communication
Our designer will work closely with the building supervisor throughout your project. We plan out carefully, pulling necessary permits, marking public utilities and such. Invariably, weather gets in the way and sometimes unexpected situations do arise (for example, changes/additions to plans, waiting on inspections, previously undiscovered drainage issues, etc). In such cases, we will keep you apprised of any new situations and how they may affect your budget, timeline and finished project.

We Deliver!

Green View offers a wide range of products including bulk & baled items. Our delivery truck is able to accommodate up to twenty scoops of mulch (which with heaping, comes out to roughly 17 yards) or ten scoops of soil (7.5 yards). Furthermore, we can deliver up to one hundred and twenty-five bales of pine needles per load.
*Be advised that we are limited to bringing one type of bulk good per delivery as we have no way of separating various products on our truck.

“Fresh To You” Program
While the plants which we keep on-site are reserved for landscape jobs, let us check our network of the best local nurseries to locate trees, shrubs, vines & ornamental grasses at the size & price for your situation. We can arrange to deliver plant material (over $50 worth + regular delivery fee) or you can swing by when it arrives at the shop.

Pricing and Availability
Our price per scoop or per bale for delivery is the same as you would find picking up at our shop. There is a competitive delivery rate, which is based on distance.
Availability is usually no problem with most of our products. However, if you will be requiring several full loads of a mulch or soil, it is helpful for us to know in advance.

Ordering
When placing an order, we will need your name, the address of delivery and a telephone number that the driver can reach you at should any difficulties arise. Please consider where the material is needed and ease of access. We can come out most work days and Saturday mornings.

Maintenance

Improving and maintaining your business or home property can be a daunting task. Our crews are able to help in a variety of ways. Whether you require seasonal plantings, corrective pruning, turf rehabilitation, or a host of other services, we are here to help!

Transformations

One of the real pleasures in our work is to see the wondrous transformations from often neglected or boring spaces to beautiful areas full of life and function.

At The Shop

Home is where the heart is. The shop is where it all begins.

Our landscape crews start early, checking vehicles, machinery, tools, supplies & materials to ensure safe transport. Often they are out very long days and return well after the shop has closed for the night. Thank you team!

Our Garden Center and Mulch Yard are well handled by Katie, Bobbie and Serena. Of course, the shop cats Bootsie, Callie and Betty know who is really in charge (whoever dispenses the kibble that day)!

Green View Design Process

A landscape designer will visit your home or property and begin our discussion. Let’s take time to learn what you like to do, how you live and what you want from this space. Also, let’s think about your tastes in architecture, color, and your design preferences.

This visit typically lasts approximately an hour. Please take the time to consider your construction budget. You may not know an exact amount, but knowing if you have $20,000 or $100,000 does determine what is really possible from the design.

With this information at hand, we will be able to give you a price range for creating a custom, professional design. After the Q&A time, our designer will begin taking measurements and photos of your property. Having a plat of your property available during our first visit is extremely helpful. This saves time and money since we aren’t recreating what someone else has already done. If it is not available, don’t worry, we can still accomplish the design.

The design creation is occasionally straightforward but often will require reworking to achieve the ideal. While this part may feel slow, it is well worth the extra time. Skipping the design process and going directly to construction usually ends up costing more in the long-run and rarely achieves the full potential of your property, time and financial investment.

Think of your design like a piece of art which we are collaborating on. Upon completion of the initial landscape design, we will set an office appointment for you to sit down, review the plan and revise. After making any requested design edits, we will then produce an estimate to install and construct your new landscape plan.

Don’t put off one of the best things you can do for you, your family, and your home. Contact us any time for more information.

Our Story

We began as a small business with young sons Richard and Ryan Saunders mowing lawns. Father Wayne was the silent partner always helping with machinery, transportation and educating his boys in responsible business practices. A few years later, they turned it into an official partnership and began Green View Landscaping and Landscape Management.

Richard attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to earn a degree in Business Marketing and Management, later going back to GTCC to learn computer-aided design (CAD) while Ryan attended Forsyth Technical College and received his Horticulture Degree.

In 1998, we incorporated and began our full-time work. Shortly after, in January 1999, we bought the mulch facility on Liberty Road where we are currently located and expanded its offerings. In that same year, Katie Saunders Coleman joined her brothers as she was pursuing her degree in Interior Design at Randolph Community College.

Wayne had backed his children for years and helped teach them his principles. He was behind the scenes providing financial backing and business acumen gathered from years of experience in the textile and furniture industries. In 2000, Wayne resigned his position in the furniture industry to go full-time with his family.

In the years since, everyone at Green View has been encouraged to further their education in the field. This means that we can really stay up-to-date on new guidelines and are aware of new innovations. Most recently, in 2017, Ryan gained his General Contractors license which nicely rounds out the Landscape Contractor, Irrigation  Contractor Licenses and many other industry certifications he already had attained.

Autumn Timing

In central North Carolina, this is generally the very best time of year for new plantings, transplanting and sowing grass seed. As stressful as cold weather can be, the summer heat is even more cruel.

However, this summer seems like it's just not going to quit. Is that USDA zone map even relevant during a year like this one?

Well, the long answer is yes. Some years are going to fall outside the regular parameters of course. However, this iteration was developed fairly recently (in 2012) & with this level of detail, it gives us pretty good guidance.

Since the heat is lasting longer, it does lend some confusion for homeowners, landscape architects and gardeners alike. We want to get that grass established, plan out autumn beds and start our winter veggies.

There needs to be enough time for roots to settle in before the frost, but we don't want it all to fry in the heat. So, it's a great idea to keep one eye peeled on the long-term forecasts. While the weather wizards aren't always right, they can at least show trends over the next couple of weeks.

Good preparation can't be stressed enough, especially in a tricky year like this one. Make sure you weed, aerate, mulch, test your soil & amend. Additionally, it is really worth thinking long term about irrigation and soaker hoses.

Good luck! If you want more information on making the most of the Plant Hardiness Zone Map, please check out the USDA site or the American Horticultural Society's very useful suggestions...

Plant it now

Summer flower orders are coming in and they are so beautiful! Our design team have really figured out what material will work best in the wide variety of gardens that we plant. They also have developed relationships with some of the best local growers.

Coleus come in a wide array of color and leaf shapes.

Here in zone 7b, we have some intense summer heat. So, now that the frosts seem behind us, let's plant! This gives time for the beauties to establish a solid root system before the dog days get going.

Caladium add a touch of brightness in filtered light areas

When considering what to plant at this time of year, it is easy to get overwhelmed by all the options. While blooms rule, foliage plants can add a lot of flavor too. For example, the showiness of impatiens or begonias may be accentuated and actually enhanced by a break of coleus or caladium.

Think about contrasted pairings for depth and interest
