Autumn Timing

In central North Carolina, this is generally the very best time of year for new plantings, transplanting and sowing grass seed. As stressful as cold weather can be, the summer heat is even more cruel.

However, this summer seems like it's just not going to quit. Is that USDA zone map even relevant during a year like this one?

Well, the long answer is yes. Some years are going to fall outside the regular parameters of course. However, this iteration was developed fairly recently (in 2012) & with this level of detail, it gives us pretty good guidance.

Since the heat is lasting longer, it does lend some confusion for homeowners, landscape architects and gardeners alike. We want to get that grass established, plan out autumn beds and start our winter veggies.

There needs to be enough time for roots to settle in before the frost, but we don't want it all to fry in the heat. So, it's a great idea to keep one eye peeled on the long-term forecasts. While the weather wizards aren't always right, they can at least show trends over the next couple of weeks.

Good preparation can't be stressed enough, especially in a tricky year like this one. Make sure you weed, aerate, mulch, test your soil & amend. Additionally, it is really worth thinking long term about irrigation and soaker hoses.

Good luck! If you want more information on making the most of the Plant Hardiness Zone Map, please check out the USDA site or the American Horticultural Society's very useful suggestions...
